Making Masks
24 June 2020
All of us have had to adapt to the new reality of our lives at home. While some of us have been, reluctantly or not, learning and developing new skills, some are finding new ways to put prior skills to use. That is most certainly the case for Lauryn Mangat, Guest Services Manager at The Blake, and her mother, Terrie Hancock Mangat. Terrie is a world-renowned contemporary quilt artist, based in Taos, NM.
Community focused values are something that the overwhelming majority of the Taos Ski Valley staff hold near and dear. Those shared ethos are what make being part of the Taos family such a great experience and Lauryn is a tremendous example of someone who really cares for her coworkers.
Lauryn recently took her level of caring to a new level. Soon after COVID-19 hit, her mother quickly noticed the urgent need for masks in the community, and responded by switching her focus from quilts to masks so that she could donate them to Taos Whole Heath and Holy Cross Hospital. It wasn’t long before Terrie got requests from friends and family in need across the country. Lauryn, having grown up around the sewing machine and in her mother’s studio, teamed up with her to facilitate orders and make the masks. So far they have made more than 300 masks, distributed free of charge, to members of the Taos community, family, friends, and loved ones.
“As we were sending masks out, we wanted to help spread awareness about wearing them in order to protect the vulnerable,” Lauryn said. “We came up with a hashtag and typed up an instruction sheet about how to wash and wear along with the request to post a pic on social media with #showmeyourmask. It feels really great to be able to give back, and I am enjoying spending the time in the studio with my talented mama.”
In an age where our health is directly linked to those in the community around us, we are so proud to have Lauryn as part of the Taos Ski Valley family. It’s very apparent that her mother helped instill some amazing values in her.
