Electric Snowmobiles Land in Taos

27 April 2023

It’s 2023, and everyone knows it’s time to turn our backs on fossil fuels in favor of better, cleaner, and more sustainable ways to get from point A to point B. As the world’s first and only Ski Resort to be certified as a B-Corporation, you can count us in.

For most of us, point A is home and point B is work. For the world-class Ski Patrol and Mountain Operations teams here at TAOS, things get a little more complicated. To scale the fabled peaks of TAOS Ski Valley with speed and agility through multiple feet of fresh snow, we’ll need something a bit nimbler than a 4WD.

For this job, we call on our trusty fleet of snowmobiles. Snowmobiles have come a long way since the early days of Model-T Fords with skis and treads strapped to the bottom. Unfortunately, like most cars, most snowmobiles are still gas-powered. At TAOS, we think it’s time to change that.

We are thrilled to introduce our new fleet of 9 Taiga Motors electric snowmobiles. These 100% electric snowmobiles will reduce noise pollution for wildlife, improve local air quality, and lower our carbon emissions to help fight global climate change – all while making sure our on-mountain teams have the reliable transportation they need for emergency repairs, urgent rescues, and the day-to-day work that helps create an amazing guest experience at TAOS Ski Valley.

“Changing over from a combustible motor to a non-combustible, like an electric machine, has always been our goal here,” said Tommy Murray, Director of Mountain Maintenance. “The more we move in this direction, the better we’re going to be for our planet, for our community, and for our mountain.”

The new Taigas are already passing Tommy’s stress tests, and TAOS plans to purchase another 8 electric snowmobiles next year. Our goal is to have a 100% electric snowmobile fleet.

These ongoing investments reflect our unwavering commitment to our people, our planet, and our place. As we look to the future, TAOS Ski Valley will continue to leave no stone unturned in our quest to become a more sustainable and environmentally friendly operation.
